School children are learning yoga for stress control

The Miami Herald reports that the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) is a pressure-packed time for kids.

To address this need, companies offering a yoga curriculum and teacher training have cropped up nationwide, according to the article, with some adding academics to the stretches.

Some examples in Florida.

  • Coral Gables Elementary School added yoga exercises for children in prekindergarten through first grade this school year.
  • Miami-Dade County middle and high school physical education teachers have been taught how to incorporate yoga and pilates into warm-up exercises in gym class.
  • In Broward County, a DVD program called Spoga4Kids, which stands for ”spunky, playful yoga,” is available to all third-grade classroom teachers.

The FCAT determines whether a school is rated excellent or failing, and whether children will be promoted.
