Simplified tai-chi benefits the elderly in long-term care
Providing a simplified tai-chi exercise program (STEP) in long-term care facilities can promote physical health in older adults.
That’s the conclusion from a study in Taiwan.
In two veteran homes, 51 older men were recruited to participate in a six-month study. All of the participants were alert and able to walk without assistance. None had dementia.
The STEP consisted of one 50-minute session three times a week for six months.
At the end of the study the participants had a significant drop in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, increased hand-grip strength, and better lower body flexibility.
