Researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore have reviewed natural health products (NHPs) and antiretroviral drugs (ARVs). Here are the results

  • St. John’s wort reduces protease inhibitor and nonnucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitor concentrations, thereby increasing the likelihood of therapeutic failure
  • Limited clinical research suggests that garlic and vitamin C lower ARV concentrations
  • Milk thistle, Echinacea species, and goldenseal do not significantly increase ARV concentrations
  • Fish oil reduces ARV-induced hypertriglyceridemia without significantly affecting lopinavir concentrations.
