Hybrid broccoli

The Financial Times reports, “A new hybrid variety richer in chemicals linked to a reduced risk of cancer and cardiovascular problems goes on sale on Tuesday” in the UK.

Here’s what we know.

  • The hybrid broccoli (called Beneforté) was developed by British academics and involves no genetic modification.
  • Beneforté contains up to 3 times the levels of glucoraphanin, which some research suggests lowers the risk of aggressive prostate cancer and heart disease.
  • The new broccoli will cost £1.49 ($2.00) each, compared with £1 ($1.32) for existing varieties.
