Alcoholic energy drinks being banned by FDA
Deaths and hospitalizations have been reported in young people, according to New York Senator Charles Schumer.
Chicago-based Phusion Projects LLC, which makes Four Loko, halted sales of its caffeinated alcohol products in New York this week under pressure from the governor of the state.
Last year, the FDA sent letters to about 30 companies including Diageo North America Inc., Constellation Brands Inc., and United Brands Co. to alert them that their products were under review.
The bottom line?
U.S. law requires that the FDA approve substances intentionally added to foods as safe. The agency has the power to seize unapproved adulterated food products.
