Nonpharmacologic management of osteoporosis

This Medscape review covers orthoses, exercise, calcium and vitamin D therapy, and kyphoplasty from an academic perspective.

According to the authors, “Nonmedical management plays a critical role in a comprehensive treatment plan.” It complements pharmacologic interventions, and is “critical in patients who cannot, or will not, take anti-osteoporotic medications.”

The authors conclude, “As considerable debate surrounds the ideal pharmacologic algorithm, it is likely that non pharmacologic interventions will have a more definitive role in future treatment considerations.”

The Harvard Women’s Health Watch offers a more practical and action-oriented approach to lowering the risk of fractures due to osteoporosis.
