Coenzyme Q predicts survival in heart failure

Researchers from New Zealand tell us, “Coenzyme Q10 deficiency might be detrimental to the long-term prognosis of congestive heart failure (CHF).”

First, the details.

  • Blood samples from 236 elderly patients with CHF were tested for LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, and total coenzyme Q10 levels.
  • The patients were followed for more than 2 years.

And, the results.

  • The range of coenzyme Q10 blood levels ranged from 0.18 to 1.75  µmol/L.
  • Coenzyme Q10 concentrations down to a cut point of  0.73 µmol/L predicted survival.
  • It remained a good predictor even after adjusting for possible confounding factors such as age, gender, previous heart attacks, etc.

The bottom line?
Coenzyme Q10 is essential for energy production in the heart. An earlier study reported that a dose of 100 mg taken 3 times daily had positive effects on the heart. Although products list a wide range of daily doses.
