The OsteoArthritis Research Society International (OARSI) is a nonprofit scientific professional organization that promotes research in osteoarthritis.

In addition to drugs and surgery, they recommend a series of non-pharmacological options to treat osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.

  • Acupuncture
  • Aerobic, muscle strengthening, and water-based exercises
  • Education and self-management
  • Footwear and insoles
  • Knee braces
  • Referral to a physical therapist
  • Regular telephone contact
  • Thermal modalities
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Walking aids
  • Weight reduction

Interestingly, the authors report, “Overall, there was no statistically significant difference between non-pharmacological therapies … and pharmacological therapies.”
