OARSI recommendations for treating osteoarthritis
The OsteoArthritis Research Society International (OARSI) is a nonprofit scientific professional organization that promotes research in osteoarthritis.
In addition to drugs and surgery, they recommend a series of non-pharmacological options to treat osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.
- Acupuncture
- Aerobic, muscle strengthening, and water-based exercises
- Education and self-management
- Footwear and insoles
- Knee braces
- Referral to a physical therapist
- Regular telephone contact
- Thermal modalities
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
- Walking aids
- Weight reduction
Interestingly, the authors report, “Overall, there was no statistically significant difference between non-pharmacological therapies … and pharmacological therapies.”
