Rumination is the voluntary or involuntary regurgitation and rechewing of partially digested food that is either reswallowed or expelled.

Interestingly, in addition to diet, exercise, and possibly surgery, all treatments are complementary.

  • Behavior therapy
  • Biofeedback
  • Breathing exercises
  • Guided imagery
  • Self-hypnosis
  • Stress management

Rumination disorder occurs in children and adults with mental retardation, as well as in those of normal intelligence. Among those with otherwise normal intelligence and development, rumination is most common in infants.

The demographics of the condition are discussed here. If you need to know more, an excellent review is here.
